Chapter 12
The Crown rejected Vanessa.
The explosion of power erupted outward from the artifact like a nuclear blast—white-gold light that shattered stone and sent bodies flying. Vanessa was thrown backward, crashing into a pillar with a sickening crunch, the Crown spinning from her hands.
Sera hit the ground hard, the suppressor cuffs cracking from the sheer force of the energy released. She gasped, feeling her power flood back—stronger, wilder, uncontrollable. The Crown had tasted her blood and awakened fully, and now it was searching for its rightful owner.
The circlet rolled across the ground and stopped at Sera's feet. Glowing. Pulsing. Calling.
She grabbed it.
The moment her fingers touched the Crown, the world dissolved. She was no longer in the temple—she was somewhere else. A white void, endless and silent, and before her stood a woman with silver hair and golden eyes. The First Luna.
*"You've found me at last,"* the apparition said, her voice like bells and thunder. *"My daughter. My heir. Take what is yours."*
*"I don't know how to control it,"* Sera whispered.
The First Luna smiled. *"You were never meant to control it. You were meant to become it. Let go, child. Let go of fear. Let go of doubt. Become the queen you were born to be."*
Sera closed her eyes. Let go.

In the temple, Kael fought through the last of the Hale warriors, his wolf form drenched in blood that wasn't his. He shifted back, staggering, his eyes wild as he searched for Sera.
He found her standing in the center of the altar room, the Crown on her head, her body bathed in golden light so bright it hurt to look at. Her eyes were open—pure gold, no iris, no pupil. Just light.
"Sera!" he shouted.
She turned. And the light expanded.
Every enemy in the temple dropped. Not dead—frozen. Every wolf that had attacked them was pinned to the ground by an invisible force, unable to move, unable to speak. Vanessa, bleeding against a pillar, stared up at Sera with pure terror in her eyes.
Dominic—who had been watching from the temple entrance—stumbled forward, his face ashen.
Sera looked at him. Her voice was not entirely her own—layered with the power of queens long dead.
*"You tried to cage me,"* she said. *"You suppressed my wolf. You broke our bond. You declared me dead. And then you hunted me to steal what was mine."*
Dominic fell to his knees. Not voluntarily—the power forced him down. "Sera—please—"
*"I am not yours to beg,"* she said. *"I was never yours."*
She raised her hand, and the frozen warriors began to dissolve—their forms turning to ash, carried away by an impossible wind. Not killed. Banished. Sent back to where they came from with the Crown's judgment seared into their wolves.
Vanessa screamed. "No! Stop! You can't—"
Sera's gaze turned to her sister. The golden light dimmed slightly—became something sadder. More human.
"I should destroy you," Sera said, her voice her own now. "For everything you took from me."
Vanessa sobbed, clutching her broken arm.
"But I won't." Sera's chin lifted. "Because I'm not you. I'm not him. I am the Lunaris Queen, and I choose mercy. But hear me, Vanessa. If you ever come near me or mine again—mercy will not be offered twice."
The light pulsed once more, and Vanessa and Dominic vanished—transported back to their territory, stripped of rank, their wolves permanently diminished by the Crown's judgment.
Then the light faded. The Crown's glow dimmed to a soft luminescence. And Sera swayed.
Kael caught her before she hit the ground, his arms wrapping around her, pulling her against his chest. "I've got you," he breathed. "I've got you."
She looked up at him, her eyes returning to their natural hazel-gold, and smiled weakly. "I did it."
"You did." His voice was rough. His hand cupped her face. "You magnificent, terrifying, incredible—"
She kissed him.
It wasn't gentle. It was desperate—weeks of tension and terror and unspoken feeling crashing together in one moment. His arms tightened around her, lifting her off the ground, and she held onto him like he was the only solid thing in the universe.
When they finally broke apart, breathing hard, foreheads pressed together, Sera whispered, "I choose you. I choose this bond. I choose us."
Kael's eyes burned. "Then it's done. You're mine, and I'm yours. From now until the stars go dark."
Ronan, bruised and bloodied, appeared at the temple entrance. He took one look at them and groaned. "Finally. Can we go home now?"
