Chapter 11
They found the Crown's location in an ancient text buried deep in Blackmoor's archives—a temple in the Deadlands, the barren wilderness between territories where no pack claimed dominion. The same Deadlands where Dominic had told his pack Sera had perished.
The irony was not lost on her.
The journey would take two days. Kael assembled a small team—himself, Ronan, three elite warriors, and Sera. They moved fast, traveling through the night, the urgency pressing them forward.
On the second night, as they made camp in a rocky gorge, Sera found herself unable to sleep. She sat apart from the group, staring at the stars—different here, raw and wild, untouched by artificial light.
Kael appeared beside her soundlessly. He sat down, their shoulders almost touching.
"You should rest," he said.
"Can't."
Silence stretched between them—comfortable, charged.
"Kael," Sera said quietly. "The bond between us. We haven't talked about it."
He was still for a long moment. Then: "No. We haven't."
"Is it real? Can a wolf have a second mate?"
He turned to face her, his silver eyes luminous in the moonlight. "Lunaris wolves are different. The texts say they can form bonds beyond the ordinary—stronger, deeper. Chosen by the Moon herself."
"And you believe that?"
"I believe what I feel." His voice was low, raw in a way she'd never heard from him. "I've spent ten years alone, Sera. I never felt a mate bond—not once. Until you collapsed on my border in a bloody wedding dress."
Sera's throat tightened. "I'm damaged. I'm complicated. I'm being hunted—"
"I don't care." He reached out, his hand curving around the back of her neck—gentle, devastating. "I will wait as long as you need. But I won't pretend I don't feel this. I won't pretend you're not mine."
She leaned into his touch, her forehead meeting his. "And if I'm not ready?"
"Then I wait." Simple. Certain. Absolute.
She closed her eyes, breathing him in. Pine. Storm. Home.

They reached the temple at dawn. It rose from the wasteland like a skeleton—white stone pillars crumbling under centuries of neglect, vines creeping over ancient carvings of wolves and moons.
Sera felt the Crown before she saw it—a pull in her blood, a resonance that made her bones hum. She stepped forward, drawn inexorably toward the temple's heart.
Inside, on a stone altar, sat a circlet of silver and moonstone—delicate, beautiful, thrumming with power. The Lunaris Crown.
Sera reached for it—
And the world exploded.
Warriors poured from every shadow—dozens of them, armed and ruthless. The Hale pack. Dominic's soldiers. They'd followed them. They'd been waiting.
Ronan roared, shifting mid-stride, crashing into the first wave. Kael's shift was instant—a massive black wolf, terrifying in his fury, tearing through attackers. The elite warriors engaged, the temple erupting into chaos.
But through the madness, a figure emerged—calm, smiling, walking straight toward Sera.
Vanessa.
"Hello, sister," she said sweetly. "Thank you for leading us right to it."
Behind Sera, strong arms grabbed her—wolves she hadn't seen, holding her fast. She thrashed, her power surging, but something clamped around her wrist—a silver band that burned. Suppressor cuffs. The golden light in her blood flickered and died.
"No—" Sera gasped.
Vanessa reached past her, lifting the Crown from the altar with reverent hands. "I knew you'd find it eventually. The Lunaris blood always knows the way." She turned the circlet in her fingers. "Now I just need a drop of yours to activate it."
She produced a knife—small, silver, gleaming.
"Hold her," Vanessa ordered.
Sera struggled, screaming. In the distance, she could hear Kael's wolf howling—separated, fighting, unable to reach her.
The blade pressed against her palm.
One drop of blood fell onto the Crown.
And everything went white.
The irony was not lost on her.
