Chapter 8: Court Day
The divorce hearing arrived faster than expected.
Diana had built an airtight case—screenshots of Derek's affair, texts from Amber, his defamatory social media post, and records of his financial recklessness.
I walked into the courthouse in a fitted black dress, looking like a woman who'd never been broken.
Derek's lawyer actually did a double-take.
Derek himself couldn't stop staring. I watched the regret flash across his face—quickly replaced by anger.
Good. Let him be angry.
"Your Honor," Diana began, "my client is seeking dissolution of marriage on grounds of adultery, emotional abuse, and financial misconduct..."
Derek's lawyer tried to paint me as the villain—abandoning the marital home, having an "inappropriate relationship" with a neighbor.
"$10,000 deposited. Public court humiliation—elevated payout."
I sat calmly, hands folded, while they tried to tear me apart.
During a recess, Derek cornered me in the hallway.
"You think you've won?" His voice was low and vicious. "Even if you get this divorce, you'll get nothing. I hid everything, Sophia. Every account, every asset. My lawyer knows every trick in the book."
"$8,000 deposited."
I smiled pleasantly. "Derek, I don't want your money."
That threw him. "What?"
"I don't want the apartment, the car, or a single cent of your savings. I just want out."
His eyes narrowed with suspicion. "Why?"
Because I'd already made more in three weeks than he earned in two years.
"Because you're not worth fighting over," I said simply.
His face went purple. He stepped forward menacingly—
"Problem here?"
Ethan appeared behind me. He'd insisted on coming, waiting in the public gallery.
Derek's bravado evaporated. He straightened his tie and walked away without another word.
Back inside, the judge reviewed everything.
Diana presented one final piece of evidence—security camera footage from our building showing Derek grabbing my arm roughly in the parking garage. Three separate occasions.
The courtroom murmured.
Derek's lawyer frantically whispered to him.
The judge's face was stone cold. "Mr. Marshall, this court takes evidence of physical intimidation very seriously."
Derek's smug expression crumbled.
The ruling came: divorce granted. I waived asset claims—which confused everyone except Diana, who trusted my judgment.
As we left, Derek grabbed Diana's arm. "She's going to regret not taking what she could. Tell her that."
Diana removed his hand like it was trash. "Touch me again and I'll add assault charges. Have a blessed day."
Outside, the sun was blinding.
I was free.
Ethan was waiting on the courthouse steps. When he saw my face, he knew.
He opened his arms.
I walked straight into them.
"It's done," I breathed.
He held me tight. "It's done."
The system announced quietly, "Divorce finalized. System entering Phase Two. New humiliation sources unlocked: ex-spouse, ex-spouse's new partner, societal judgment. Enhanced payouts now active."
Phase Two?
There was a Phase Two?
