Chapter 7: Getting Bolder
That evening, Ethan came over to my hotel room with takeout bags.
He'd brought my favorite—spicy noodle soup from the hole-in-the-wall place three blocks from our building. The one I mentioned exactly once, two months ago.
"You remember everything, don't you?" I said, watching him set up the food on the small table.
"Only the things that matter." He didn't look up, but his neck flushed.
We ate in comfortable silence. Afterward, he cleaned up without being asked—just naturally moved around the space like he belonged in it.
I watched him from the bed, legs tucked under me.
"Ethan."
"Hmm?"
"I need to ask you something crazy."
He sat down across from me, giving me his full attention. Those gray-blue eyes were steady and patient.
"The system," I started slowly, "it needs me to keep... experiencing humiliation. From Derek, his family, anyone connected to the betrayal. That's how it works."
I'd decided to tell him. If this was going to work—whatever "this" was becoming—he needed to know.
I explained everything. The system's voice. The deposits. The physical transformations.
When I finished, Ethan was quiet for a full minute.
Then: "Show me your bank account."
I opened my phone and showed him the balance. $149,000.
He didn't even blink at the number. Instead, he asked, "And the 14-day rule? If you don't get humiliated for two weeks, you lose the last upgrade?"
"Yes."
"So you need to keep putting yourself in situations where these people hurt you."
"Yes."
His jaw worked. "I hate that."
"I know."
"But I understand it." He met my eyes. "What do you need from me?"
I hadn't expected that. No argument. No telling me I was crazy. No "maybe you should see a doctor."
Just: what do you need?
"I need someone who won't let me get hurt beyond what I can handle," I said quietly. "Derek's getting angrier. His family's getting worse. I can provoke them for the payouts, but I need... backup."
"Done." No hesitation. "Anything else?"
I bit my lip. "Don't... judge me? For wanting the money. For using their cruelty to get ahead. I know it sounds—"
"It sounds like survival." He leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "Sophia, you spent six years giving everything to a man who gave nothing back. If the universe is finally paying you what you're owed, who am I to question it?"
Something hot pressed behind my eyes.
Nobody had ever just... been on my side. Completely. Without conditions.
"Thank you," I whispered.
He reached over and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers were warm and slightly rough.
"For the record," he murmured, "you were always beautiful. Even at a 5.8 or whatever the hell that system called it."
I laughed wetly. "You heard that part?"
"I heard everything. And that system is wrong." His thumb traced my cheekbone. "You were always a ten to me."
The air shifted. Thickened.
I leaned in without thinking.
He met me halfway.
The kiss was soft at first—tentative, questioning. Then his hand slid to the back of my neck, and it became something deeper. Something hungry.
When we broke apart, both breathing hard, the system chimed.
"Romantic bond formation detected. Glow stability increased by 30%. This bonus is permanent and cannot be reversed."
I laughed against his lips. "Even the system approves."
Ethan grinned—a rare, full smile that transformed his serious face into something devastating. "Good. Because I'm not going anywhere."
