Chapter 1

The night my fated mate threw me into the silver pyre, I watched him hold another woman's hand, and the flames melted my skin to the bone.

The sacred fire of the Blood Moon Ritual was never meant for me.

It was meant for her—Serena Vale—the so-called lost daughter of the Crescent Pack, the wolf who was "prophesied" to unite the five territories.

But my mate, Alpha Dominic Ashford, decided I should take her place.

Because Serena cried. Because she said the fire would kill her. Because she told him she was afraid.

And he believed her.

He always believed her.

The silver-laced flames consumed me, searing through muscle and tendon, and my wolf howled inside me—dying, shrinking, being burned alive from the inside out.

I could still hear his voice through the roar of the fire.

The Moon Goddess System—the ancient link between Alphas and fate—was screaming in his mind. I could hear it, the way all fated mates could hear their Alpha's system in their final moments.

"WARNING. The True Luna—Elara Voss—is being destroyed. Her lunar essence is the only key to the Blood Moon Seal. If she perishes, the Seal breaks, and the Shadow Plague will consume all five territories. SAVE HER NOW."

Dominic's voice cut through the flames, annoyed—like swatting away a fly. "Enough. Elara's wolf is strong. Silver fire won't kill her. She's survived worse."

The system blared louder. "Her vitality is dropping below critical! Host, according to the prophecy, SERENA was meant to endure this trial! You have altered fate! Reverse this immediately!"

I heard him sigh, as though I was an inconvenience.

"Serena doesn't have a wolf yet," he said. "You really think she'd survive silver flames? Use your head. Elara's lunar abilities make her practically fireproof. This is nothing to her. I've got healers standing by."

He spoke about my burning flesh the way someone talks about a minor scheduling conflict.

"Besides," he continued, and I could hear the softness creep into his voice—the softness he only ever used for her—"Serena's been anxious for weeks. She's terrified the pack won't accept her without completing the ritual. If Elara takes the fire and survives, Serena gets the credit, the pack's loyalty, everyone's happy. Two birds, one stone."

Two birds, one stone.

That's what my agony was to him. Efficiency.

The silver ate deeper. My wolf was gone. I couldn't feel her anymore—just silence where she used to be. A void where our bond lived.

Through the flames, I forced my burning eyes open.

And there he was.

Dominic Ashford. The most powerful Alpha in five territories. My fated mate. The man I'd loved since I was sixteen.

He stood twenty feet away, pristine in his black coat, watching the pyre with mild concern—like watching a steak cook a little too long.

And beside him, clinging to his arm with those perfect tears streaming down her perfect face, was Serena.

She caught my gaze through the fire.

And smiled.

A small, secret, victorious smile that no one else could see.

In that moment, I understood everything.

I understood that every soft word she'd whispered about "just wanting to be sisters," every tear she'd cried about "feeling so guilty for taking my place"—it was all a performance.

And my mate—my fated, Goddess-chosen mate—was her puppet.

My body convulsed. Something cracked inside me—not bone, not flesh, but something deeper.

The mate bond.

I felt it snap.

And with it, the last reason I had to survive.
