Chapter 7

Daniel Ashford's office occupied the top floor of a glass tower in the financial district.

No name on the building. No company logo. Just clean lines and power radiating from every surface.

His assistant led me through a minimalist lobby into a corner office with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

Daniel stood when I entered, gesturing to a leather chair across from his desk.

"Coffee? Tea?"

"Information," I said, sitting down.

He smiled — genuine, not practiced. "Straight to business. I respect that."

He opened a drawer and placed a thin file on the desk between us.

"Your stepmother, Helen, didn't act alone in hiding your mother's will. She had a partner. Someone who stood to gain significantly from keeping you ignorant of your inheritance."

I opened the file. Inside was a photo of a man I didn't recognize — silver-haired, distinguished, cold eyes.

"Who is this?"

"Richard Blackwell. Your mother's former business partner. When Mei Lin died, he and Helen struck a deal. He got operational control of certain Zhao Group subsidiaries. She got the family estate and your father's assets."

My stomach turned. "My mother's partner betrayed her?"

"Thoroughly." Daniel leaned back. "He's been running those subsidiaries into the ground, extracting wealth, and funneling it into his own ventures. If your mother could see what he's done to her legacy—"

"How do you know all this?" I cut in.

Daniel paused. Something shifted behind his eyes.

"Because Richard Blackwell is my father."

The room tilted. I stared at him.

"Before you leave—" he raised a hand, "—let me explain. My father and I are not on speaking terms. Haven't been for seven years. He's a thief and a liar, and I've spent the better part of a decade trying to undo his damage without getting killed."

"Killed?" I echoed.

"Richard doesn't tolerate threats to his empire. Two people who tried to expose him had... accidents." His voice hardened. "I won't be the third. But with your resources and my information, we can take him down legally. Permanently."

I studied his face for a long moment. Looking for deception, for angles.

"Why help me? What do you gain?"

"Justice," he said simply. "And the satisfaction of watching my father lose everything he stole."

I thought about it. This man was offering me the final piece — the part of my mother's legacy still in enemy hands.

"If you're lying to me," I said calmly, "I will destroy you too."

He didn't flinch. "I'd expect nothing less."

We shook hands across the desk, and I felt the electricity of alliance forming — dangerous and thrilling.

"There's something else," Daniel said as I stood to leave. "Ryan Carter has been making calls. He's trying to find leverage against you. Anything to regain control."

I paused. "What kind of leverage?"

"He's been talking to Helen."

The words landed like stones in water, ripples spreading.

Ryan and my stepmother. Working together.

The man I'd wasted three years on was now conspiring with the woman who stole my inheritance.

"Let him try," I said, my voice cold as iron. "He has no idea what he's stepping into."

I left Daniel's office with the file tucked under my arm and fire in my veins.

My phone buzzed as I reached the elevator.

Ryan: "We need to talk. It's about your mother's estate. I know something you don't."

I stared at the message.

So it had begun. The desperate moves of a cornered man.

I typed back: "Tomorrow. My office. 10 AM."

Let him come to me this time. Let him sit in the smaller chair.

Let him feel what powerlessness tasted like.
