Chapter 3
The Grand Atrium of the Carter estate glittered beneath a thousand crystal lights.
Everyone who mattered in this city was here — politicians, business moguls, old money families whose names filled the society pages.
And somewhere among them, my enemy was plotting to take what was rightfully mine.
I arrived at 7:45 PM. Not through the main entrance with the other guests, but through a side door that led directly to the grand staircase overlooking the ballroom.
I wanted them to see me from above first. I wanted them to look up.
Below, the crowd mingled. Ryan stood near the bar in a black tuxedo, Victoria Lane draped on his arm like an expensive accessory. She was beautiful — I could admit that. Tall, willowy, with the kind of effortless elegance that came from a lifetime of wealth.
Eleanor circulated the room, accepting compliments on the décor — the décor I had arranged just hours ago.
Sophia was surrounded by her usual circle of socialites, their laughter sharp enough to cut glass.
None of them had noticed I was missing.
My phone vibrated. Leo: "Board notification sent. You have 15 minutes before it goes public."
Fifteen minutes. That was all the time I needed.
I took a breath, adjusted the diamond pendant at my throat — my mother's, recovered from a safety deposit box my stepmother didn't know about — and stepped into the light at the top of the staircase.
The reaction was immediate.
Conversations faltered. Heads turned. The woman in the red gown at the top of the stairs was unrecognizable as the meek, invisible wife they had all dismissed.
I descended slowly, each step deliberate.
Sophia saw me first. Her champagne glass froze halfway to her lips.
"Who is—" she started, then her eyes widened. "Ashley?"
The name rippled through the crowd.
Ryan turned. For the first time in three years, he actually looked at me. I mean truly looked.
His jaw tightened. Something flashed in his eyes — surprise, confusion, and something else I couldn't name.
Victoria's fingers tightened on his arm.
Eleanor rushed toward me, her face a mask of controlled fury.
"What are you wearing?" she hissed. "I told you to look decent, not to make a spectacle of yourself! This is humiliating—"
"Eleanor." I said her name calmly, clearly, without the respectful "Mrs. Carter" I'd always used. "I'd suggest you lower your voice. In about ten minutes, you're going to want me in a very good mood."
She recoiled as if slapped.
Before she could respond, Ryan was at my side.
"What are you doing?" His voice was low, controlled, but I could see the confusion in his eyes.
"Exactly what you asked," I replied coolly. "One last appearance."
"This isn't—" He glanced around at the staring guests. "You look—"
"Different?" I offered. "Perhaps you're just seeing me for the first time."
Victoria appeared at Ryan's shoulder, her smile sweet and poisonous.
"Oh, you must be the soon-to-be ex-wife I've heard so much about." She extended a manicured hand. "I'm Victoria. I suppose I should thank you for keeping his life organized while I was away."
I looked at her hand, then back at her face.
"Victoria Lane," I said. "Daughter of Marcus Lane. Currently negotiating a merger with the Zhao Group."
Her smile flickered. "You know my father?"
"I know a great deal about your family." I turned away from her. "Enjoy the evening. It's about to get very interesting."
I walked toward the bar, leaving them in stunned silence.
At exactly 8:00 PM, the side doors opened, and Leo walked in, flanked by two lawyers in dark suits.
He carried a single folder.
The room quieted.
Ryan frowned, moving toward the newcomers. "This is a private event. Who let you in?"
Leo ignored him completely and walked straight to me.
"Ms. Zhao," he said clearly, loud enough for the nearby guests to hear. "The acquisition is complete. Carter Corp's controlling shares now belong to Zhao Holdings. You are the majority stakeholder."
The silence was deafening.
