Chapter 13
The Council deliberated for six hours.
When they returned, Theron's face was carved from granite.
"The Council has reached its verdict." His voice silenced the hall. "The Lycan bloodline claim of Nora is hereby *verified* and *recognized.* Furthermore, the Council finds Elder Voss and the Voss family guilty of systematic fraud, blood magic conspiracy, and suppression of a protected bloodline."
Voss lunged to his feet. "You can't—this is—"
"Elder Voss, you are hereby stripped of your seat. Your family's assets are frozen pending investigation. And Serena Voss is to be detained for questioning regarding the self-inflicted curse and contract manipulation."
Guards moved. Voss was escorted out, shouting—his voice growing fainter until the doors closed and silence returned.
Theron turned to Nora.
"As the last verified pure-blood Lycan, you hold a unique position in our society. The Council formally extends an invitation for you to claim a sovereign seat—a territory of your own, independent of any existing pack."
A sovereign territory. A *kingdom.* Something no wolf had been offered in two hundred years.
Nora stood tall. Composed. Radiant.
"I accept."
The hall erupted in whispers, gasps, applause. Dominic watched from his seat with quiet satisfaction. I watched with something that felt like my heart being ripped slowly from my chest.
She'd done it. Without me. Despite me.
As the proceedings closed and wolves began filing out, I tried to reach her. Pushed through the crowd, desperate for one moment—one word—
"Nora!"
She turned. Those golden eyes met mine—and for the first time, they held no anger. No pain. No love.
Just peace.
"Kael." She said my name like it belonged to someone she'd once known. A distant acquaintance. A chapter already read.
"I'm sorry." The words poured out—useless, too late, but all I had. "For everything. For the contract, for the silence, for the years I wasted. You deserved better. You deserved—"
"I know." She cut me off gently. "I know I did."
"Can I—is there any chance—"
"No." Soft. Final. Merciful. "We were fated, Kael. But fate isn't enough. Not when trust is broken this completely. Not when I spent three years wondering why I wasn't enough—when the answer was that you simply never chose me."
"I choose you now."
The smallest smile touched her lips—sad, distant, already letting go.
"You chose too late."
She turned. Dominic appeared at her side—not possessive, not performative. Just *present.* The way a partner should be. The way I never was.
They walked out together. And the last thing I saw was Nora stepping into the sunlight, head high, shoulders back, golden eyes blazing—a queen who'd forged her own crown from the chains I'd bound her in.
The door closed.
And she was gone.
