Chapter 7

The filing hit the press before it hit Ethan's legal team.

I didn't plan it. Margaret didn't leak it. But court filings are public record, and when the name "Ethan Cole" appears in any legal document, journalists notice.

By morning, it was everywhere.

*"TECH BILLIONAIRE ETHAN COLE SECRETLY MARRIED FOR THREE YEARS—WIFE FILES FOR ANNULMENT"*

*"Cole's Hidden Spouse: What He Didn't Want Investors to Know"*

*"The Secret Mrs. Cole: How One Woman Disappeared from Her Own Life"*

My phone died by 9 AM from calls. My hospital's PR department asked me to "refrain from speaking publicly." Grace cornered me in the locker room with her mouth hanging open.

"OLIVIA. You were married? To ETHAN COLE?"

I pulled on my scrubs. "I need to do rounds."

"Rounds? ROUNDS? You were secretly married to a billionaire and you're doing ROUNDS?"

"People don't stop being sick because my life is messy, Grace."

She followed me down the hall, whisper-screaming. "Why didn't you tell me? We've been friends for six months! I showed you his PHOTO and you said HMM!"

"Grace. I signed an NDA."

That shut her up. Briefly.

"Is that why you never dated anyone here? I kept trying to set you up with Dr. Park—"

"I need to see my patients."

She let me go but pointed aggressively: "We're talking about this LATER."

I threw myself into work—the only stable thing I had left. Twelve-hour shift. Six patients. Two emergencies. No time to think about the headlines burning across every news app.

But during my break, I made the mistake of checking.

The article in the Times was thorough. They'd found the marriage certificate. They'd found the NDA filing in the court documents. They'd quoted "sources close to the couple" confirming that Olivia Chen had been completely invisible during the marriage.

The comments were worse.

*"This poor woman gave up her medical career for him?"*

*"He literally made her sign an NDA about being his WIFE. That's psychological abuse."*

*"Serena must have known. There's no way she didn't know."*

Serena had already released a statement: *"I was deceived. I fully support Ms. Chen's legal proceedings."*

And Ethan? His company's PR issued a single line: *"Mr. Cole respects the legal process and will not be commenting at this time."*

At 11 PM, my shift ended. I walked out of the hospital to find a wall of cameras.

"Dr. Chen! Over here!"

"Olivia! How do you feel about Ethan's silence?"

"Did you know about Serena before the gala?"

I kept my head down, walking fast. A car pulled up—Margaret's driver, right on time.

Inside the car, I exhaled.

My phone buzzed. Ethan. Not a text this time—a voicemail. I pressed play.

His voice was hoarse. Wrecked.

"Olivia. I know you won't answer. I know you won't read my messages. But please—" A long pause. Breathing. "Don't do this publicly. I'll sign. Whatever you want. The divorce, the annulment—I'll sign. Just call off the press. Please."

He was begging.

Ethan Cole—who never begged for anything—was begging.

Not for me to stay. Not for forgiveness. Not for another chance.

He was begging me to protect his reputation. Even now.

I deleted the voicemail and called Margaret.

"He's offering to sign."

"I know. Richard Park called me twenty minutes ago." Margaret's voice was crisp. "They're offering an uncontested annulment plus a settlement. Generous one."

"I don't want his money."

"I know. But take the meeting. Let him sit across from you in a room and sign those papers to your face." She paused. "After everything he did—you deserve to watch."

She was right.

"Schedule it."
