Chapter 7

Neither of them spoke about it.

For three days, they existed in careful orbit—close but never touching. Sera threw herself into training with a fury that impressed even Ronan. She was getting stronger every day, her wolf rising closer to the surface, golden eyes flashing in moments of intensity.

But at night, alone in her room, she couldn't stop thinking about that single word: *Mate.*

It was impossible. She'd already had a mate—Dominic. The bond had been severed. You didn't get a second chance. That wasn't how it worked.

Except nothing about her had ever worked the way it was supposed to.

---

On the fourth night, she was heading back from the training grounds when she sensed it—a wrongness in the air. Like a held breath before a scream.

She stopped. The corridor was empty. Too empty.

Then the shadows moved.

Three figures materialized from the darkness—masked, dressed in black, moving with lethal precision. Assassins. They didn't speak. Didn't hesitate.

The first one lunged.

Sera's wolf exploded to life inside her. She dodged—barely—the blade whistling past her ear. Her body moved on instinct, faster than she'd ever moved in training. She grabbed the attacker's arm, twisted, and sent him crashing into the wall.

But the other two were already on her. A blade caught her shoulder—white-hot pain. She cried out, stumbling backward.

*Fight,* her wolf snarled. *We fight.*

Power surged through her—raw and untamed. Golden light flickered at her fingertips. She didn't understand it, couldn't control it, but she threw it outward anyway.

The blast sent both assassins flying.

They hit the walls with sickening thuds, crumpling. But one was already rising, pulling a second blade—

A roar shook the corridor. Not hers.

Kael appeared like vengeance incarnate. He moved so fast he was barely visible—one moment at the end of the hall, the next standing over the fallen assassin, his hand around the man's throat.

"Who sent you?" Kael's voice was barely human. His eyes had shifted to pure wolf—molten silver, feral, murderous.

The assassin choked, clawing at Kael's grip. "The… Council… Elder petition…"

Kael's hand tightened. Something cracked. The assassin went limp.

He turned to Sera. Blood ran down her shoulder, and her golden light was fading, but she stood upright, refusing to collapse.

"You're hurt," Kael said. His voice was still rough, his wolf still close to the surface.

"I'm fine."

"You're bleeding."

"I said I'm fine—"

He was in front of her in one stride, his hand catching her uninjured arm, steadying her. This close, his scent was overwhelming—pine and storm and something primal that made her wolf keen.

"Don't lie to me," he murmured, his silver eyes searching hers. His thumb traced a line along her jaw—gentle, impossibly gentle for a man who'd just killed someone with his bare hands.

Sera's breath caught. The mate bond—or whatever this new connection was—pulled taut between them like a live wire.

"Kael…" she whispered.

"I know." His forehead dropped to hers, just briefly, just barely. "I know."

Then he pulled back, his expression hardening into the mask of a king. "Ronan," he called into the darkness. His Beta appeared instantly. "Lock down the palace. Full security sweep. And find out how they got past our wards."

He looked back at Sera, and something fierce burned in his gaze. "No one touches you again. I swear it."

As Ronan escorted her to Dr. Maren, Sera's heart was still racing—not from the attack, but from the feeling of Kael's forehead against hers. The warmth of his breath. The quiet certainty in his voice.

She was falling for the Alpha King.

And that terrified her more than any assassin ever could.
