Chapter 12: The System’s Secret

That night, alone in bed while Ethan showered, I had a serious talk with the system.

"System. I'm at 9.8. My bank account has over $400,000. I'm happy." I paused. "What happens now?"

"You've nearly reached maximum optimization, Host. One more qualifying event will bring you to 10.0—the system's hard cap."

"And then?"

"At 10.0, the system completes its cycle. Final rewards will be distributed. The system will then present you with a choice."

"What choice?"

"You'll see when you get there, Host."

Cryptic as always.

"One more thing," I said. "I noticed Derek's life is falling apart. His job. His relationship with Amber. His mental health. Is that... because of the system?"

Silence.

"System?"

"The system does not directly interfere with external parties. However... there is a natural equilibrium function built into the code.

"Energy transferred to the Host must come from somewhere.

"Your gains are sourced from the emotional and karmic debt owed to you by those who caused harm."

My blood ran cold. "So every dollar I earn, every upgrade I get... it comes directly from Derek's life force? His luck? His success?"

"In simplified terms: yes."

I sat with that for a long time.

Derek losing his job. Amber looking haggard. His family's increasing dysfunction.

It wasn't just karma. It was the system—extracting what was owed, draining them to fuel me.

Did I feel guilty?

I searched deep inside myself.

No.

They chose to hurt me. They chose cruelty, again and again. The system simply ensured there were consequences.

And if the universe decided those consequences should benefit me?

I'd accept that.

Ethan came out of the shower, towel around his waist, steam rolling off his shoulders.

He saw my expression and immediately sat beside me. "What is it?"

I told him everything the system had revealed.

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "Good."

"Good?"

"They owe you, Sophia. Every single one of them. A debt like that doesn't just disappear because you sign divorce papers." He pulled me into his arms. "You're not doing anything wrong. You're just finally getting what's yours."

I buried my face in his chest.

"What if the final event happens and the system leaves?" I whispered.

"Then you'll still be you." He kissed the top of my head. "Still brilliant. Still strong. Still mine."

I tilted my face up to look at him.

"Yours?"

He grinned. "If you'll have me."

I grabbed his face and kissed him hard enough to make us both dizzy.

When we broke apart, breathless, the system chimed softly.

"Romantic bond at maximum strength. Permanent glow bonus locked: 25%. This will remain regardless of future system status."

Even if the system left—a piece of it would stay.

A piece built not from pain, but from love.
