Chapter 8

Friday morning. The courthouse steps. Cameras everywhere.

Alexander's hand was steady on my back as we walked through the crowd. I wore a simple black dress. No jewelry except my wedding ring. Every detail curated by his PR team to project calm, strength, dignity.

Inside, Derek sat with his lawyers. He looked sober. Clean-shaven. A different man from Wednesday night.

Vanessa sat in the gallery behind him, wearing white like an angel.

The judge called the room to order.

Derek's lawyer opened: "Your Honor, my client seeks only to establish biological paternity and reasonable visitation. He was denied knowledge of his children's existence for five years—"

"Because he attempted to murder their mother," our lawyer interjected.

The courtroom buzzed.

"Objection. No criminal charges have been filed—"

"They will be," Alexander's lead attorney said calmly. "As of this morning."

She presented the traffic camera footage, the financial records, the voicemail. Derek's lawyer went pale.

I watched Vanessa's face. She didn't flinch. She was waiting for something.

Then it was my turn to testify.

I told them everything. The cliff. The cold water. The rocks tearing my skin. Waking up in a stranger's clinic with broken ribs and a baby fighting to survive inside me.

"I spent three months in recovery. I gave birth to premature twins alone in a hospital room. I had no money, no identity, no family. The man who saved me gave me all of those things."

"And that man is your current husband?" the judge asked.

"Yes, Your Honor. Alexander Cavanaugh."

"Do you believe the children are in danger with their biological father?"

"I believe Derek Hale stood and watched while I fell to what should have been my death. I believe he celebrated the next morning. A man capable of that is capable of anything."

The voicemail played for the courtroom. Derek's casual voice: *"It's done. She's gone."*

He dropped his head.

Then Vanessa stood from the gallery.

"Your Honor, I have evidence that is critical to this case."

The judge frowned. "You are not a party to this proceeding—"

"I am the children's aunt. And what I have concerns their safety." She held up a USB drive. "Security footage from Alexander Cavanaugh's home. Showing him — with the children."

My stomach dropped.

Alexander's hand found mine under the table. Steady. Unworried.

The footage played on a screen. It showed Alexander in his study, voice raised, phone in hand. In the background, Ellie could be seen listening at the door.

"I don't care what it costs. I want them destroyed. Both of them. By Friday."

Vanessa's voice rang out: "He's talking about Derek and me — in front of the children. This is the environment those girls are being raised in. Violence. Threats. A man obsessed with vengeance—"

"That call," Alexander said calmly, standing, "was about a hostile takeover of two subsidiary companies. 'Them' refers to corporate entities. Not people."

His lawyer immediately presented phone records, the call transcript, the business deal in question.

The judge reviewed both. "Ms. Hale, this evidence is misleading at best, fabricated at worst. I'm striking it from the record."

Vanessa's composure finally cracked. "He's manipulating everyone! Just like he manipulated her! He stalked her for months before—"

"One more outburst and I'll hold you in contempt," the judge warned.

Vanessa sat down, seething.

But I saw it — the flicker of fear in her eyes. She'd played her hand. And it wasn't enough.
