Chapter 1: Sign It

My husband threw divorce papers at my face on our third anniversary.

His mistress was my stepsister.

She was pregnant with his child.

He said I was worthless, barren, and a burden.

I picked up the pen and signed my name with a smile.

What satisfying Cross didn't know was that thirty minutes ago, I received a DNA test result that changed everything.

"You're… not going to fight this?" Daniel Cross stood in the middle of our living room, his six-foot frame tense with suspicion.

Behind him, my stepsister Lily Bennett sat on my couch, her hand resting on her barely-visible belly, watching me with those wide, innocent eyes.

I clicked the pen shut and tossed the papers back onto the coffee table.

"Why would I fight it?" I said. "You've made yourself perfectly clear."

For three years, I had been Mrs. Cross. Three years of cooking his meals, managing his household, attending his events with a perfect smile while he controlled every dollar I spent.

Three years of being told I wasn't good enough—not pretty enough, not smart enough, not fertile enough.

Three years of Lily whispering poison into his ear while playing the sweet, helpless sister who "never meant to come between us."

Daniel narrowed his eyes. "No tears? No begging?"

He seemed almost… disappointed.

In the past, he would have been right to expect it. Old Ava would have collapsed, would have pleaded, would have asked what she did wrong.

But old Ava didn't know what I knew now.

"Ava," Lily's soft voice floated over. "I'm so sorry. I never wanted this to happen. Daniel and I… we tried to fight our feelings—"

"Save it," I cut her off.

Lily flinched, her eyes instantly filling with tears. She turned to Daniel, her lip trembling.

Right on cue, Daniel's expression hardened. "Don't talk to her like that. She's carrying my child."

I almost laughed. Almost.

Instead, I pulled out my phone, opened the email I'd received that morning, and read it one more time.

*Ms. Ava, we are pleased to confirm that your DNA is a 99.97% match with the Sterling family. Your biological parents, Richard and Catherine Sterling, have been searching for you for twenty-three years. They request an immediate meeting.*

The Sterlings. One of the four wealthiest families in the country. Net worth: thirty-two billion dollars.

I was their stolen daughter.

I locked my phone and dropped it into my purse.

"I'll have my things out by tomorrow," I said, standing up. "Congratulations on the baby."

I walked toward the door. My heels clicked against the marble floor Daniel always reminded me he paid for.

"That's it?" Daniel called after me. His voice carried a strange edge—confusion, maybe even irritation that I wasn't giving him the dramatic scene he'd prepared for. "Three years, and you just walk away?"

I paused at the door and looked back at him.

At the man who made me sleep in the guest room.

Who told me my family was trash.

Who let his mother humiliate me at every holiday dinner.

Who let Lily move into our home "temporarily" six months ago and never asked her to leave.

"Three years was long enough," I said. "Don't worry, Daniel. You'll hear from me again soon."

I stepped outside into the cold evening air.

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom was parked at the curb. A man in a tailored suit stood beside it, holding the rear door open.

"Ms. Sterling?" he said. "Your family is waiting."

Behind me, I heard Daniel's footsteps reach the doorway.

I didn't look back.

I slid into the car, and the door closed behind me with a soft, satisfying click.

Through the tinted window, I saw Daniel standing on the porch, frozen, staring at the car that cost more than his annual salary.

The driver pulled away.

My old life disappeared in the rearview mirror.

And my new one had just begun.
