Chapter 3

I tapped the screen twice and held the phone up so the room could hear.

Nathan's voice filled the silence, lazy and intimate: *"She's so stupid, Soph. She actually believes I work late."*

Sophia's answering laugh, breathy and pleased: *"Poor Elena. She tries so hard to be a good wife. It's almost sad."*

*"Almost."* His voice dropped lower. *"Come here."*

The recording was three minutes long. I let it play for forty seconds—enough to make the point unmistakable.

Nathan lunged across the table. "Turn that off!"

I pulled the phone back, just out of reach. "Sit down."

"Where did you get that?" His face had gone white, then red. "You bugged my apartment?"

"Your apartment?" I tilted my head. "It's listed under my name, Nathan. The lease I just signed away. Check the address."

He froze.

Victoria recovered first. "That proves nothing. A recording can be faked. You probably hired some voice actor—"

I swiped to the next file. A medical report from St. Elian's Hospital, dated three weeks before Sophia's supposed miscarriage.

Patient: Sophia Mills.

HCG levels: Negative.

Pregnancy status: Not pregnant.

"She was never carrying your grandchild, Mrs. Carter." I set the phone on the table, screen facing them. "There was no baby to lose. There was no push. There was no staircase incident."

Sophia's face drained of color. For the first time, her mask slipped, just for a moment. Something raw and panicked flashed in her eyes before she recovered.

"That's not mine," she said quickly. "She fabricated it. Nathan, you know I would never—"

"The hospital stamp is verifiable," I said. "Call them."

Nathan stared at the report. His jaw worked, but no words came.

Victoria stood frozen, processing. I watched the calculations run behind her eyes: damage control, reputation, liability.

"Even if—" Victoria started.

"Even if what?" I folded my arms. "Even if your son's mistress lied about being pregnant to frame his wife? Even if you almost forced me to sign a confession that could have put me in prison?"

I looked at each of them in turn. "You wanted this divorce. You got it. But you will not bury me with lies."

I picked up my copy of the signed divorce papers and slid them into my bag.

"We're done here."

"Wait." Nathan's voice came out strangled. He reached for my arm. "Elena. We need to talk about this privately. If you go public with those recordings—"

"You're worried about your reputation?" I pulled my arm free.

"You should have thought about that before you spent three years humiliating me."

I turned toward the door.

"Elena!" Victoria's voice cracked like a whip. "If you walk out that door with those files, I will destroy you. I will make sure no one in this city hires you, houses you, or even looks at you. You will have nothing."

I paused with my hand on the doorknob.

And smiled.

"Mrs. Carter," I said, "you have no idea who you married your son off to."

The conference room door burst open before I could turn the handle.
