Chapter 3
"Mrs. Cole... Alexander is taking Rebecca to the Laurent Charity Gala tonight."
My assistant Diane's voice shook as she delivered the news the next morning.
The Laurent Gala.
The most exclusive charity event of the year—the one where Alexander and I had been photographed together for three consecutive years as the "power couple of the decade."
He was taking his secretary. To our event. In front of every major investor, board member, and journalist in the city.
This wasn't just disrespect anymore.
This was a declaration of war.
"There's more," Diane whispered. "Rebecca is wearing a custom Valentino gown. Alexander had it made for her. And she's... she's listed on the guest registry as his 'partner.'"
Partner.
The word hit me like a bullet.
Not assistant. Not plus-one. Partner.
He was publicly replacing me.
I stood at my window, staring at the city that had once felt like my kingdom.
Three years of sacrifice. Three years of twelve-hour days rebuilding his company. Three years of hosting his clients, charming his investors, and cleaning up his messes.
And this was my reward—being erased and replaced by a twenty-four-year-old with lip filler and no MBA.
"Diane."
"Yes, Mrs. Cole?"
"Get me my lawyer. Not Marcus—the other one. The one who handles acquisitions."
"And pull up every share certificate, every contract, every document with my name on it from the Cole Industries vault."
I turned from the window, and my reflection in the glass showed someone I barely recognized—someone harder, colder, and infinitely more dangerous.
"Tonight, I'm going to that gala."
"But Mrs. Cole—if Alexander is there with her—"
"Exactly." I picked up my phone. "And tell my driver to bring the car around at eight."
"Which car?"
I smiled. "The Maybach. The one registered under my maiden name."
The name no one in the Cole family knew.
The name that would change everything.
